Five signs your motorcycle chain needs replacing

A motorcycle chain is finished when any one of five signs shows: it pulls away from the rear sprocket far enough to show daylight, a link is kinked or frozen, the slack changes as the wheel turns, rust has pitted the rollers, or the axle adjusters have run out of travel. With regular care a sealed chain lasts 20,000–40,000 km (12,000–25,000 miles); neglected, about half that. One sign is enough — they all measure the same thing, which is wear inside the pins where you cannot see it.
The pull test, done precisely
Grip the chain at the rearmost point of the rear sprocket — three o'clock as you look at the wheel — and pull it straight back, away from the bike. On a healthy chain the rollers sit seated in the teeth and it barely moves. On a worn chain it lifts clear and shows daylight between chain and sprocket.
What you are measuring is pitch. Chain stretch is not metal elongating: it is the pins and bushings wearing thinner, so each link sits slightly further from the next and the chain effectively grows. A grown chain rides higher on the sprocket teeth, and pulling it exposes the gap. Half a tooth of daylight means order the replacement now. A full tooth means stop planning and start replacing. The test takes ten seconds and no tools — do it every time you lube.

Kinks show best from behind the bike: spin the wheel slowly and watch the lower run leave the sprocket. A worn-out link holds an angle instead of hanging straight. Its seals have failed, the factory grease is gone, and its pins run dry — that link now wears many times faster than its neighbours.
Tight spots reveal themselves when you check the chain tension: 30 mm of slack at one wheel position, 15 mm at another. That is uneven pin wear, and the tight section runs overtaut on every revolution. Variation beyond about 10 mm means the chain is on its way out.
Rust needs judging honestly. An orange bloom on the side plates after a damp week wipes off — cosmetic. Rust that has pitted the rollers, or seized a link solid, has done its damage where no polish reaches.
The adjusters are the swingarm's built-in wear meter. Their travel exists to take up chain wear, and when the marks reach the end, the chain has used its entire allowance. There is no adjustment left to give, and the chain is telling you so.
Read the sprockets too
Chain and sprockets wear together. Worn teeth take a shark-fin profile — one face worn hollow, tips hooked in the direction of rotation — or wear thin and pointed like waves. A chain that has started running noisy or slapping is often being pulled at by hooked teeth. If either sprocket shows hooking, the chain that shaped it is worn to match, which is why the honest fix is the full set, replaced together. A new chain on hooked sprockets is money half wasted.
Why you do not ride out a failing chain
A chain that lets go at speed has three exits. Best case, it snaps and rattles off down the road, leaving you coasting to the verge. Worse, the loose end whips into the engine cases hard enough to hole them. Worst, it bunches between the sprocket and the swingarm and locks the rear wheel. That last one is a crash, not a breakdown. If a link is frozen or the pull test shows a full tooth of daylight, stop riding the bike and have the chain replaced first.
Getting full life from the next one
The spread between 20,000 km and 40,000 km is mostly care: regular lubing, periodic cleaning, and correct tension. When the new chain goes on, write the date and odometer reading into your maintenance log. Every chain-wear judgement comes down to how old the chain is and how far it has run, and the log is the only place that answer survives.

Can you fix a kinked chain link?

Is it safe to ride with a tight spot in the chain?
Briefly and gently, yes — set the slack at the tightest point so the chain never runs taut, and plan the replacement. The tight spot is uneven internal wear; it will not improve, and the rest of the chain is usually not far behind it.
Does chain stretch mean the metal has actually stretched?
No. The steel plates never elongate. Stretch is wear: the pins and bushings thin down, the pitch between links grows, and the chain measures longer. That is also why a stretched chain cannot be recovered, and why the adjusters eventually run out of travel.
