Chain noise: what each sound is telling you

A healthy chain at correct tension is close to silent — a faint, even whir under power and nothing else. A dry whirring or whine means the chain needs lube today; a clunk once per wheel revolution means a tight spot or a worn sprocket; metallic grinding means stop and inspect before riding any further. Chain noise is one of the most useful diagnostics on a motorcycle, because each failure mode has its own sound.

One test sorts chain noise from engine noise before you go further: chain noise tracks road speed, not revs. Pull the clutch in and coast — if the sound carries on unchanged, it is drivetrain. If it drops with the revs, look at the engine instead. Cam-chain rattle at idle, in particular, gets blamed on the drive chain constantly and has nothing to do with it.

Isolate it on the stand

Put the bike on a paddock stand, engine off, gearbox in neutral. Rotate the rear wheel slowly by hand and listen at the rear sprocket — this is where a screwdriver handle to the ear, or just patience, earns its keep.

Watch the lower chain run as the wheel turns. If the slack visibly changes — taut at one point in the wheel's rotation, drooping at another — the chain has tight spots, meaning it has worn unevenly along its length. Find the tightest point and measure the slack there: most street bikes want 25–35 mm (1.0–1.4 in) of movement at the middle of the bottom run, and the manual's figure wins. While you are down there, flex the chain sideways and look at each link as it passes. A link that will not rotate freely, or sits at an angle to its neighbours, is kinked — the seal has failed and that joint is running dry.

Slap is slack

Chain slap is the clatter from under the swingarm at low speed, over bumps, or when you roll on and off the throttle. The cause is nearly always excessive slack: the chain has enough free movement to whip and strike the slider or guard. It is more annoying than dangerous at first, but slap accelerates wear on the chain, the slider, and eventually the swingarm itself, and a badly loose chain can derail.

The fix is an adjustment, not a new chain — unless the slack is there because the chain has worn to the end of the adjusters' travel. Do not overcorrect: a chain set too tight loads the gearbox output bearing and the sprockets hard, and the suspension compressing tightens it further. Set slack to specification, measured at the tightest spot.

The once-per-revolution clunk

A rhythmic clunk that repeats once for every turn of the rear wheel is telling you the wear is uneven. Either the chain has a tight spot, or a sprocket has worn or damaged teeth — often both, since each condition feeds the other.

Check the sprockets visually. Healthy teeth are symmetric; worn teeth lean over like shark fins or develop a hooked profile that holds the chain a moment too long as it leaves. The front sprocket wears faster than the rear — it is smaller, so each tooth engages more often — and it hides behind a cover, so pull the cover and look. Noise that follows work you just did

A chain that turns noisy straight after a tyre change or wheel removal is usually reporting that the rear wheel went back in crooked. Misalignment runs the chain onto the sprockets at an angle; the sound is a whine or chirp that was not there before, and the wear shows up on one face of the teeth. Check the marks on both adjuster blocks — then measure properly anyway, because the stamped marks on plenty of swingarms are not symmetric.

A new chain whirring on old sprockets is the other classic. Fresh rollers meshing with hooked teeth make constant noise and wear fast, which is why chain and sprockets are replaced as a set.

Over-tightening after an adjustment makes its own noise: a taut hum under power, sometimes a growl near the front sprocket as the gearbox output bearing takes the strain. Slack that measured correct can still be wrong if it was not taken at the tightest spot, or if the bike was leaning on the side stand when you measured.

When noise means park the bike

Grinding, a chain that jumps teeth under power, visibly kinked links, or slack that is beyond the adjusters' range: these are stop-riding conditions. A chain that derails or snaps at speed can lock the rear wheel. If any of these are present, the ride is over until the chain is inspected and, in most of these cases, replaced.

Everything milder than that is maintenance you are hearing in arrears. Why is my chain loud after riding in the rain?

Rain washes the external lube off the rollers and plates, and a wet chain left overnight grows flash rust by morning. The dry whine you hear the next day is the chain running unprotected. Relube after every wet ride once the chain has dried, and it stays quiet.

Is some chain noise normal?

A faint, even whir under power is normal — a chain is metal rolling on metal, and sealed chains are never perfectly silent. What is not normal: whining that grows over days, any rhythmic clunk, squeaking at walking pace, or clatter from under the swingarm. Those all have causes worth finding.

Can a worn front sprocket cause chain noise?

Yes, and it is easy to miss because it sits behind a cover. The front sprocket is smaller than the rear, so each tooth engages the chain more often and wears roughly twice as fast. Hooked or shark-finned front teeth cause clicking and clunking that gets blamed on the chain. Pull the cover and inspect it whenever noise appears.

What does a dry chain sound like?

A whirring or light whine that rises with road speed and persists while coasting with the clutch pulled in. In a worse state it becomes squeaking at walking pace. Lube deals with it within a few kilometres; if squeaking continues after cleaning and lubing, check for kinked links with failed seals.
