Any detectable play, or any notchiness when the wheel spins slowly, means the bearings get replaced now — wheel bearings are not a monitor-and-wait item. The check takes two minutes, needs no tools, and belongs in every tyre change and every pre-season once-over. Bearings give quiet warnings for a while, then fail quickly, and the failure mode at the end of that road is a locked wheel.
The two-minute check
Get the wheel off the ground on a paddock stand or centre stand. Grip the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock — hands on the tyre, not the spokes — and push-pull firmly. Repeat at 3 and 9 o'clock. A healthy hub gives you nothing: no click, no knock, no sensation of movement. Any play you can feel at the rim is a large amount of play at the bearing, and the verdict is replacement.
The front wheel needs one extra step, because steering-head play can masquerade as a bearing problem. Put one hand on a fork leg and the other on the wheel while you rock it. If the wheel moves relative to the fork, it is the wheel bearing. If the whole front end moves together, the play lives in the steering head — a different job entirely.
Then the spin test. Rotate the wheel slowly by hand and listen: a good bearing is smooth and close to silent. Grinding, ticking, a dry rumble, notchy spots, or a wheel that drags to a stop are all failures. Rest your fingers on the fork leg or swingarm while the wheel turns — a rough bearing telegraphs vibration through the metal before it makes much noise.
At the rear, the easiest habit is to pair the check with work you already do back there. You are at the rear wheel every time you check chain tension; adding the rock test costs thirty seconds. Finish with a look at the seals on both sides of each hub. Rust-brown streaks or weeping grease around a seal mean water has been past it, and that bearing is living on borrowed time even if it still feels fine.

What failure feels like from the seat
On the road, worn wheel bearings announce themselves as vagueness before they make noise. The front feels imprecise, the bike develops a faint weave at speed, and a hum or drone builds — one that changes with lean angle rather than with revs or gear. The plain safety line: felt play in a wheel bearing is a stop-riding condition. A bearing that has started to break up can go from noisy to collapsed quickly, and a collapsed bearing can lock the wheel. The bike stays parked until new bearings are in.
Lifespan, and what shortens it

The pressure washer is the main offender. A jet aimed at the hub drives water past seals that were designed for rain, not 100-bar spray, and the grease washes out from the inside; the bearing then fails months later, long after anyone connects cause and effect. Replace them in complete sets per wheel — if one has failed, its partner has lived the same life — and never mix one new bearing with one old. The job is honest DIY with a drift, a socket that matches the outer race, and patience, or about an hour of shop labour per wheel. Modern sealed bearings take no regreasing or adjustment; their only service is replacement.

Bearing life is a diagnostic in itself: a set that lasts 40,000 km is normal, while a set that dies in 15,000 km is telling you something about washing habits, seals, or a bent axle — a pattern you only see if the dates and distances are written down.
