New vibration at speed: where to look first

A new vibration is a message, and one question halves the diagnosis: does it track road speed or engine speed? Vibration that follows how fast you are moving, regardless of gear, points at tyres, wheels, chain, and bearings. Vibration that follows revs — and is there blipping the throttle in neutral — points at the engine and its mounts. From there, work the likely causes in order: tyre wear and balance, chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, engine mounts, steering head.

The question that halves the job

Run the test on a quiet road. Hold a steady speed where the vibration is present, then change down a gear and hold the same road speed. The revs jump; if the vibration is unchanged, it belongs to the road-speed side — wheels, tyres, chain. If it rises with the revs, it belongs to the engine side. Confirm the engine side on the stand or at a stop: blip the throttle in neutral, and if the buzz appears with revs while the bike is stationary, the wheels are innocent.

Tyres and wheels first

Tyres cause more new vibrations than everything else combined, and the checks are free. A rear squared off by commuting puts a flat strip in the middle of the tread; it hums and buzzes at motorway speed and ruins turn-in long before the wear bars show. If the vibration appeared right after a tyre change, suspect balance before anything else. Stick-on wheel weights fall off, and a weight the fitter missed announces itself at 90–110 km/h (55–70 miles per hour) through the bars. Look for the clean rectangular ghost where a weight used to be, and get the wheel rebalanced — it is a cheap fix. While you are looking, check pressures cold: an underinflated tyre flexes, runs hot, and feels vague and buzzy at once.

Chain: the once-per-turn surge

A chain with a tight spot loads and unloads once per wheel revolution, and you feel it as a rhythmic surge or lurch at steady low speed — more push-pull than buzz. Put the bike on a stand and rotate the rear wheel slowly: the slack changes as a worn chain moves through its tight spot. Bearings, and when to park it

Worn wheel bearings start subtle: a hum that changes with lean angle, steering that feels vague, a vibration that grows over weeks rather than appearing overnight. Draw one hard line: vibration combined with a weave or wobble is a park-it condition. A bike that shimmies at speed, or wanders under braking, may have collapsing bearings or a loose axle, and either one can lock a wheel. Stop riding and check it, or have it checked, before the next ride.

Steering-head bearings belong on the same list. A clunk under hard braking, or a notch you can feel when the bars sweep through centre with the front wheel raised, means they are worn or over-tightened — and a front end that will not self-centre smoothly makes every other vibration worse.

Braking pulse is its own case

Pulsing through the brake lever at speed, felt only while braking, is not a balance problem. It is disc runout or uneven pad-material transfer, and it has its own diagnosis in warped brake disc symptoms. Do not chase it with wheel weights.

Engine-speed buzz

If the vibration tracks revs, start cheap: engine-mount bolts loosen, especially after other work has been done nearby, so check their torque before assuming the worst. Then look at the bolt-on suspects — heat shields, fairing fasteners, luggage racks, and number plates all resonate at specific rev ranges and transmit buzz that feels mechanical. A single-cylinder or big twin also simply buzzes more at certain revs; if the bike has always done it, that is character, not a fault.
