Brake fluid: why it has an expiry date

Change motorcycle brake fluid every two years, regardless of mileage. It is a calendar item, not a distance item: DOT 4 fluid absorbs water from the air from the day it enters the system, the water lowers its boiling point, and the result is a lever that goes long exactly when the brakes are hot and working hardest. A garage-kept bike with 3,000 km (1,900 miles) on the clock needs the change as much as a daily commuter.

Hygroscopic, in plain terms

Glycol-based brake fluid attracts and holds water. It pulls moisture through the rubber hoses, past the seals, and through the reservoir breather — slowly, invisibly, and constantly, whether the bike is ridden or parked. Two years in a brake system typically puts 2–3% water into the fluid. Nothing looks wrong from outside: the level does not move, the lever feels normal in town.

The problem appears under heat. Hard or repeated braking pushes the fluid in the calipers well past 100 °C (212 °F). Water in the fluid flashes to steam, and unlike liquid, steam compresses — lever travel that used to move the pads now squeezes bubbles instead. The lever comes back long, or reaches the bar, at the bottom of the mountain or at the end of a fast stop. Riders call it fade; this particular kind is entirely preventable with a calendar.

The absorbed water also works from the inside out. It corrodes caliper pistons, master cylinder bores and ABS internals, which is how calipers seize and expensive hydraulic parts die years early. Fresh fluid is cheap insurance for every metal part it touches.

Why bikes get hit harder than cars

A motorcycle brake system holds a small volume of fluid, and the calipers sit in the heat coming off the discs with little around them to soak it up. One committed stop from speed can push caliper temperatures to levels a car reaches only on a track day. Less fluid plus more heat per gram means the wet boiling point stops being a laboratory number and becomes something you can find on a public road.

Fresh DOT 4 boils at around 230 °C (446 °F) — the dry boiling point. The wet figure, measured at 3.7% absorbed water, is about 155 °C (311 °F) for the same fluid. A two-year-old fill is well on its way to the wet number. The margin you paid for disappears without a single symptom until the day it matters.

The colour check

New brake fluid is pale straw, close to clear. Old fluid darkens toward tea, then coffee, as moisture and heat break it down and seal wear stains it. Look through the reservoir window, or open the cap and look — ten seconds. Dark fluid is overdue, full stop.

Colour is a lagging indicator, though. Fluid can be past its boiling-point margin while still looking respectable, so clear fluid past the two-year mark is still due. The calendar outranks the eyeball.

DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1 — and the DOT 5 trap

Your reservoir cap or manual states the fluid. Most motorcycles specify DOT 4.

DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are the same glycol family at rising boiling points, and they mix — filling a DOT 4 system with 5.1 is an upgrade, with DOT 3 a downgrade. DOT 5 is the odd one out: silicone-based, usually purple, meant only for systems designed around it. In a glycol system it does not mix, attacks nothing but fixes nothing, and turns the fluid to sludge that no bleed fully removes. If the cap says DOT 4, buy DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 and nothing else.

When two years is too long

Two years is the standard schedule, not a ceiling to coast toward. Track riders change fluid yearly or more, because repeated hard stops find the wet boiling point fast. Bikes that live outdoors in humid or wet climates absorb moisture faster than the garage-kept average. And any brake work that opens the system — new lines, a caliper rebuild — means fresh fluid throughout by definition. If in doubt, change it: the material cost is a $10–20 (€9–18) bottle.

Treat the symptoms as deadlines

Brakes are a safety system, so the rule is plain: if the lever creeps toward the bar, feels spongy, or the fluid is dark, deal with it before the next ride. The fix is within home skills — bleeding the brakes through with fresh fluid takes under an hour. If a full flush does not restore a firm lever, work through the spongy lever diagnosis in order; the causes beyond old fluid are few and findable. While the calipers are in front of you, check the pads — the two jobs share the same ten minutes of access.

Because this is a time-based job, write the date and odometer in your maintenance log. A two-year clock only works if you know when it started, and almost nobody remembers a fluid change eighteen months later.

FAQ

Can I just top up brake fluid instead of changing it?

No. The water is dissolved throughout the system, and most of it sits in the calipers where the heat is. Topping up the reservoir with fresh fluid changes almost nothing downstream — only a full flush through the bleed nipples replaces it. A dropping reservoir level usually means the pads are wearing, not that fluid needs adding.

How long does brake fluid last once the bottle is opened?

About 12 months tightly capped, less if the cap is loose — the fluid absorbs moisture from the air in the bottle exactly as it does in the bike. Buy small bottles, use what the job needs, and start the next job with fresh stock rather than a half bottle of unknown history.

Can I use DOT 5.1 instead of DOT 4?

Yes. DOT 5.1 is glycol-based like DOT 4, fully compatible, with higher dry and wet boiling points. Do not confuse it with DOT 5, which is silicone-based and must never enter a glycol system. Read the label twice — the naming is genuinely bad.

Does brake fluid really go bad on a bike that just sits?

Yes. Moisture absorption continues while the bike is parked, because it comes through the hoses and breather rather than from use. A stored bike can have worse fluid than a ridden one, since nobody is watching it. Two years is two years, odometer or no odometer.
