How to store a motorcycle for winter

Winter storage comes down to five jobs: a full tank with fuel stabiliser, the battery on a smart maintainer, tyres off the cold floor, a wash plus corrosion protectant, and a breathable cover. It is an afternoon of work, and it decides whether spring opens with a ride or a repair list.

The big four killers

Storage itself does not damage motorcycles. Four specific things do, and every job on the prep list exists to block one of them.

  • Flat battery. Self-discharge plus the clock and alarm circuits will drain a battery in a matter of weeks, and a lead-acid battery left flat sulphates — it never fully recovers. A smart maintainer prevents the whole failure mode; battery care covers the details and the lithium exceptions.
  • Stale fuel. Petrol starts degrading within 1–3 months. Ethanol blends absorb water, and the varnish left behind blocks carburettor jets and injectors. Stabiliser plus a full tank stops both.
  • Tyres. Months of sitting on one contact patch flat-spots them, and a cold concrete floor accelerates cracking in rubber that is already ageing.
  • Corrosion. Condensation cycles in an unheated garage attack bare metal all winter, and any autumn road salt still on the bike keeps working the whole time.

The prep list

Work the list top to bottom. Wash the bike properly — without forcing water anywhere it should not go — and make sure it is bone dry before anything gets covered. Run the engine for a few minutes after adding stabiliser so treated fuel reaches the carburettors or injectors, then park it for good. Paddock stands are the best answer for tyres; failing that, inflate to the maximum pressure printed on the sidewall and put plywood or carpet between rubber and concrete.

Change the oil before storage, not after

The before-or-after debate has a chemical answer: before. Used oil carries acids and combustion by-products, and leaving them to sit against bearings and cases for four or five months is exactly the slow etching you change oil to avoid. Store the bike on fresh oil and it is still fresh in spring — oil ages on the calendar too, but a winter parked on clean oil costs it very little.

If the oil was changed recently anyway, ride the bike once more to get it fully warm, then put it away. Warm oil drains better and carries the contaminants out with it at the next change.

What not to do

  • Do not run the engine for five minutes every week. A short idle never reaches full operating temperature, so it loads the oil and exhaust with condensation and achieves the opposite of what it feels like it achieves. Either take the bike for a proper 20-minute ride on a dry day, or leave it alone until spring.
  • Do not use a plastic tarp. It traps moisture underneath, sweats against the paint, and turns the bike into a condensation chamber. Breathable covers exist for this exact reason.
  • Do not drain the tank on a fuel-injected bike. A full, stabilised tank protects the pump and seals far better than months of dry air. Carburettor bikes are the exception at the other end: turn the petcock off and drain the float bowls, because a bowl of stale fuel is where varnish does its damage.
  • Do not leave an old-style trickle charger connected. Constant-current chargers overcharge over months and cook the battery. A maintainer with a float mode is the tool for the job.

Write it down, then walk away

Make the last entry of the season before you switch the light off: date, odometer, oil changed, stabiliser in, anything you noticed — pads getting thin, a weeping fork seal. Log it so spring-you knows exactly where the bike stands instead of guessing. Then leave the bike alone. The maintainer light and an occasional glance under the cover are all the attention it needs until the spring wake-up.

Should I start my motorcycle every few weeks over winter?

No. Short idles never fully warm the engine or exhaust, so they add condensation instead of driving it off — worse than leaving the bike parked. If you want to run it, ride it properly for 20 minutes on a dry day. Otherwise trust the prep and leave it be.

Is it better to store the tank full or empty?

Full, with stabiliser, for anything with fuel injection or a metal tank — no air space means no condensation, and the pump and seals stay wet. On carburettor bikes, also drain the float bowls; the small volume of fuel in a bowl goes off fastest and gums the jets.

Can I store a motorcycle outside under a cover?

It works, with compromises. Use a breathable outdoor-rated cover, be more generous with corrosion protectant, keep the tank full and the battery on a maintainer indoors if you can remove it, and put something between the tyres and the ground. Expect a longer spring checklist than a garaged bike needs.

Should I disconnect the battery instead of using a maintainer?

Disconnecting stops the parasitic drains, but the battery still self-discharges over a winter, and lead-acid batteries dislike sitting partially charged. A smart maintainer is the better answer. If there is no power point, disconnect the battery, store it somewhere cool but frost-free, and charge it monthly.
