Service intervals explained: km, miles, and months

Every service interval on a motorcycle is two limits, not one: a distance and a time, and whichever comes first wins. Oil oxidises sitting in the sump, brake fluid pulls water out of the air, tyres harden parked on concrete. A bike that covers 2,000 km (1,250 miles) a year does not skip services — it hits the calendar limits instead of the odometer ones.

Two clocks, both running

The distance limit tracks mechanical wear: chain stretch, brake pad material, filter loading, valve seats slowly recessing. Ride more, wear more. Simple enough that most riders internalise it without trying.

The time limit tracks chemistry, and chemistry does not need the engine running. Engine oil oxidises and collects condensation from temperature swings in the garage, which is why it carries a 12-month limit even on a bike that barely moves. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs water through the reservoir and hoses — so its boiling point drops on a schedule of its own, and the 24-month replacement limit applies at any mileage. Tyre rubber hardens with age; wet grip fades years before the tread wears out, which is why tyres carry an age limit of roughly 5–10 years alongside their wear bars. Seals, cables and coolant age the same way: quietly, parked.

This is the part low-mileage riders get wrong. Riding less slows the odometer intervals down. It does nothing to the calendar ones. A garage queen still needs its fluids on time, and its tyres are often the oldest parts on it.

These are typical figures for a modern road bike. The schedule in your owner's manual wins every time it disagrees — treat this table as the shape of the schedule, not the schedule itself.

The two you will deal with most often sit at the top. Chain lube is the shortest interval on the bike, and the one that shifts most with conditions — how often to lube the chain covers what shortens it. The oil change interval varies most between bikes, because oil load varies most between engines. Pads and tyres are inspection items rather than fixed replacements: you check them on a rhythm and replace them on condition.

Why your manual says something different

Intervals differ between bikes for mechanical reasons, not marketing ones. A small-capacity twin commuting at high revs shears its litre and a half of oil far harder than a big tourer turning lazily with four litres in the sump. A supersport asks more of its valvetrain than a cruiser. An adventure bike's air filter lives a dustier life than a sportsbike's ever will.

So a 5,000 km (3,100 miles) oil interval on one bike and a 15,000 km (9,300 miles) interval on another can both be correct. The maintenance chart in the manual is the contract for your specific engine — it outranks any general guide, this one included. If you do not have the manual, most manufacturers publish PDFs, and owner forums keep the out-of-print ones alive.

Severe use halves the distances

Every manual carries a second schedule for what it politely calls severe use, and it applies more often than riders admit:

  • Dust and gravel: the air filter loads up in half the distance.
  • Repeated short trips: the oil never reaches full temperature, so condensation and fuel dilution build. Halve the oil interval.
  • Track days: oil, pads and tyres age in fast-forward. One hard track day can equal thousands of road kilometres of wear.
  • Winter salt: chain, bearings and fasteners corrode between services. Clean and lube far more often, and rinse the salt off promptly.

The rule of thumb is blunt: halve the distance interval, keep the time limit unchanged. Chemistry does not care how you ride.

Ride the countdown

The mindset that makes a schedule workable is a countdown, not a diary. Not "when did I last change the oil" but "the oil is due in 1,400 km (870 miles)". Every task gets a distance-to-due, and the odometer ticks them all down together. The same logic settles trip planning on the spot: a 2,000 km trip with the oil due in 1,400 means the oil is due now, before you leave.

Countdowns only work from a known starting point — what was done, at what reading, on what date. That is a maintenance log's entire job, and it costs a minute per entry. Without it you are estimating, and estimates on a two-year fluid or a 30,000 km valve check drift badly. What happens if I go over a service interval?

Nothing dramatic at a few hundred kilometres over — intervals carry margin. The damage from running long is cumulative and invisible: oil that has stopped protecting, fluid that boils under hard braking, a chain quietly wearing its sprockets. Book the job when the countdown reaches zero, not at the next convenient round number.

Do I still need to service a motorcycle I barely ride?

Yes — the calendar half of the schedule runs regardless. Oil once a year, brake fluid roughly every 24 months, tyres by age. A bike that covers a few hundred kilometres a year skips the distance services, never the time ones.

Should I trust the dealer's service reminder or the manual?

The manual is the baseline. A good dealer follows it and adds items your riding justifies — a severe-use schedule is legitimate if you commute short distances or ride through winter. If a recommendation exceeds the manual, ask which riding condition triggers it. A vague answer is your answer.
