Motorcycle oil explained: viscosity, JASO, synthetic

Run the viscosity your owner's manual specifies — for most motorcycles that is 10W-40 with a JASO MA or MA2 rating — and treat everything else on the label as detail. The rating matters because most bikes run the engine, gearbox and a wet clutch in the same oil, and car oils built around friction modifiers can make that clutch slip. Where the manual and the shelf disagree, the manual wins.
What 10W-40 actually means
The two numbers describe one oil at two temperatures. The figure before the W — winter — rates cold flow. A 10W oil stays thin enough at low temperature to reach the camshaft quickly on a cold start; a 5W still flows in conditions where a 15W has gone treacly. Most engine wear happens in the first minute after a cold start, before oil pressure has fully built, so this number is not academic.
The figure after the dash rates viscosity at operating temperature, around 100 °C (212 °F). A 40 holds a thicker film when hot than a 30. So a 10W-40 behaves like a light oil on a cold morning and a medium-bodied one at full working temperature. That is the whole point of a multigrade: one oil covering both ends of the day.
Neither number is a quality score. A 10W-50 is not an upgrade over a 10W-40 — it is simply thicker when hot, which your engine either wants or does not. Too thick, and oil moves sluggishly on cold starts and costs a little power to churn. Too thin, and the film gives up at the hottest spots: under the piston crown, between gear teeth. Manuals usually print a chart of grades against ambient temperature, with hot climates at the heavier end. Follow the chart, not the forum.
The wet clutch problem
On most motorcycles the clutch plates run bathed in engine oil. Cars have no such arrangement, so car oils are free to chase fuel-economy targets with friction modifiers — additives that make lubricated surfaces slipperier. The words to watch for on a car bottle are Energy Conserving or Resource Conserving; that is the additive package a wet clutch cannot live with.
Put that oil in a wet-clutch bike and the plates can lose their grip. The symptom is unmistakable once you know it: revs climb under acceleration while road speed lags behind, worst in the higher gears. The clutch does not fail on the spot. It glazes gradually, and by the time the slip is constant the plates need replacing — a far more expensive fix than the few units saved on oil. JASO, the Japanese automotive standards body, wrote its T 903 standard precisely to sort oils by how much friction they preserve.
Reading the JASO box
The rating sits in a small box on the back label. Four grades exist:

MB is the trap. It is a legitimate rating for scooters whose clutch does not share the engine oil, and it sits on the same shelf in near-identical bottles. In a manual-gearbox bike it invites exactly the slip described above. If your manual asks for MA, an MA2 oil satisfies it — MA2 is the safe default on anything modern with a wet clutch.
Mineral, semi-synthetic, full synthetic
Base oil is the other axis. Mineral oil is refined crude: the cheapest, entirely adequate for older and low-stress engines, and happiest on shorter change intervals. Semi-synthetic blends add stability for a small premium and suit most road bikes. Full synthetic is engineered rather than refined: it resists shear — a gearbox physically tears oil molecules apart, thinning the oil over time — holds its viscosity longer, flows better cold, and tolerates heat better.
Synthetic earns its price on high-revving engines, track use, hot climates, and long distances between changes. On a bike that covers 3,000 km (1,900 miles) a year and gets fresh oil every 12 months regardless, mineral or semi-synthetic does the job in full. And switching a healthy modern engine from mineral to synthetic is fine — the old stories about sudden leaks date from seal materials abandoned decades ago.
Spend on the interval, not the label
The right cheap oil changed on time beats boutique oil changed late. An oil that meets the manual's grade and carries the right JASO rating, changed at the interval your bike actually needs — typically every 6,000–12,000 km (4,000–7,500 miles) or 12 months, whichever comes first — protects better than race oil left in for two seasons. The additive package depletes either way; the expensive one just depletes at a higher price.
A sensible litre of JASO MA2 semi-synthetic costs $10–15 (€9–14), and a full change in parts runs $40–80 (€35–75). Changing oil yourself takes under an hour, and checking the level costs one minute a week. When you do change it, note the brand, grade and odometer reading in a maintenance log — next time at the parts counter you will be matching a record instead of guessing from memory.

Can I use car engine oil in my motorcycle?
Not safely, unless your manual explicitly allows it. Car oils marked Energy Conserving or Resource Conserving carry friction modifiers, which is exactly what a wet clutch cannot tolerate. A motorcycle-specific JASO MA or MA2 oil removes the gamble for a small premium, and a slipping clutch costs far more than the difference.
Is JASO MA2 better than MA?
MA2 sits at the high-friction end of the same standard, so it gives the clutch plates the most to grip. For a modern wet-clutch bike it is the safe default. Plain MA remains fine where the manual specifies it — the difference matters most on bikes ridden hard or already prone to slip.
Can I mix oil brands or switch from mineral to synthetic?
Yes. Oils of the same grade and JASO rating mix safely for a top-up, and a healthy modern engine can move from mineral to full synthetic at the next change without any ritual. What you should not mix is ratings — never top up a JASO MA fill with MB scooter oil.
Does thicker oil protect a worn engine better?
It can quiet one, briefly. A heavier grade softens mechanical noise from a tired engine, but it also slows cold-start flow — the moment when most wear happens. Stay inside the grades your manual lists, and treat new noise as a symptom to diagnose rather than drown.
