Air filters: clean it or replace it?

It depends on the filter, not the bike. Paper filters get replaced — typically every 15,000–20,000 km (9,000–12,500 miles) — while foam and cotton-gauze filters get cleaned and re-oiled. Ride on dust or gravel and those intervals halve. So the first job is identifying what actually sits in your airbox; the service method follows from the material, and the manual has the interval for your specific bike.
Know which type you have
Most road bikes leave the factory with a pleated paper element — white or beige card folded into pleats, sometimes in a plastic frame. Dirt bikes and many older machines use foam: a soft sponge element run oiled, designed to be washed and re-oiled indefinitely. Cotton-gauze filters — the reusable performance type, usually red or purple with visible cotton weave in a wire mesh — are mostly aftermarket fitments, sold on flow and lifetime reuse. Pull the filter once and look; thirty seconds settles the question for the life of the bike.

Paper: replace it, do not resuscitate it
A paper element filters through microscopic pores in the card, and once those pores load up with dust, the filter is finished. Blowing it out with compressed air looks effective — dust flies, the element looks cleaner — but the air jet enlarges pores and tears fibres in ways you cannot see, and the filter that goes back in passes more dirt than it catches. Fine dust that gets past a filter works like lapping compound on rings, bores, and valve seats.
That is the false economy in one line: you save the price of a $30 (€28) element and spend it, with interest, on engine wear. Tapping a filter gently to knock loose surface dust and finish a trip is fine as a roadside measure. It is not a service. When a paper filter is due, it gets replaced.
Foam: the wash and re-oil routine
Foam is the opposite philosophy — the element is a permanent part and the oil is the filter. Wash it in dedicated foam-filter cleaner or warm soapy water until the rinse runs clear, squeeze it gently (wringing tears the cells), and let it dry completely. Then work foam-filter oil evenly through it until the whole element is uniformly coated with no dry patches, squeeze out the excess, and smear a light film of grease on the sealing face where it meets the airbox.
On a road bike a foam element wants cleaning roughly every oil change. Off-road it is a different discipline entirely — after every dusty ride or two — because foam bikes tend to live where the air is dirtiest.
Cotton-gauze: by the kit, not by instinct
Cotton-gauze filters are serviced with the manufacturer's own cleaner and oil, and the kit instructions are worth following exactly. Soak with cleaner, rinse gently with low-pressure water from the clean side outward, and let it air dry — no compressed air, no heat gun. Then oil lightly and evenly, and stop: over-oiling is the classic mistake, and on fuel-injected bikes excess filter oil can migrate onto intake-side sensors and upset the running.
An honest note on the trade: independent testing has generally shown gauze filters flow a little more and filter a little less than good paper. The real benefit is lifetime reuse, not horsepower you will feel from the seat. That is a reasonable deal for many riders — as long as it is made knowingly.
How a choked filter shows up
An engine breathing through a blocked filter runs rich: fuel economy drifts down, the top end goes flat, and throttle response turns woolly. Sooty black spark plugs tell the same story from inside the combustion chamber, and on carburetted bikes the rich-running symptoms arrive earlier and more obviously. Fuel injection compensates quietly for a while, which means an injected bike can hide a dirty filter until it is very dirty indeed — another argument for servicing on schedule rather than on symptom.
Dust exposure rewrites every interval. A season of gravel roads, dry trails, or desert riding can load a filter in a fraction of its paper-rated life; halving the book interval is the standard and sensible correction.
Access, and when to do it
The honest range: on some bikes the filter is two minutes under the seat; on others the tank and half the bodywork come off to reach the airbox. Check the manual before you assume either. If access is the painful kind, bundle the filter with jobs that already open the bike up — the oil change or a proper full-service day — so the labour is paid once.
Then write it down: date, odometer, and whether the element was cleaned or replaced, in your maintenance log. Air filters are precisely the item memory loses, because nothing dramatic marks the last change — and the difference between guessed and known is the difference between a filter serviced at 18,000 km and one quietly sabotaging the engine at 35,000.

Can I wash a paper air filter and reuse it?
