Motorcycle tyre pressure: the numbers that matter

Run the pressures your bike's maker printed on the placard and in the manual — for most street bikes that lands at 2.2–2.5 bar (32–36 psi) front and 2.5–2.9 bar (36–42 psi) rear — checked cold, once a week. Those two numbers do more for grip, stability and tyre life than any accessory you can buy, and almost every tyre problem that is not a puncture starts with pressure nobody checked.
The placard beats the sidewall
The pressure moulded into a tyre's sidewall is the maximum the carcass is rated to hold. It is a structural limit, not a recommendation, and inflating to it is the most common self-inflicted pressure mistake. The recommendation comes from the bike's maker — on a sticker on the swingarm, chain guard or frame, and in the manual — and it was set for your bike's weight, geometry and intended load.
Tyre manufacturers publish model-specific pressures occasionally, and those are legitimate too. But when a shop, a forum and a sidewall all disagree, the manual is the baseline. Deviate from it knowingly or not at all.
Cold means cold
Pressure specifications assume a cold tyre: parked for three hours or more, before the first ride of the day. Riding warms the air inside and pressure rises roughly 10%, so a tyre checked warm and bled down to the placard number ends up underinflated once it cools.
The practical habit is a morning check. If you must check warm, a reading around 10% over placard is roughly right — confirm it cold soon after.
Two background drifts are worth knowing. Pressure tracks temperature, roughly 0.1 bar (1–2 psi) for every 10 °C, so the first cold week of autumn quietly takes a couple of psi from both tyres. And tyres seep naturally — around 0.05–0.1 bar (about 1 psi) a month is normal. Losing that much in a week is not: check the valve core and search the tread for a nail before it turns into a replacement decision.
The weekly gauge check is the calibrated one; a glance at both tyres belongs in the two-minute pre-ride check as well, because a visibly soft tyre lost its air fast.
Why bikes care more than cars
A motorcycle carries everything on two contact patches about the size of a credit card each, and the shape of those patches is set by pressure. A car mostly converts wrong pressure into wear and fuel bills; a bike converts it into steering feel and grip. And at full lean the bike is working the shoulder of the tyre — exactly where underinflation does its damage.

Underinflation is the common failure, because it is the direction tyres drift on their own. The tyre flexes more, runs hotter, wears its shoulders and steers vaguely — and because a slow leak feels normal for weeks, riders adapt to it the way they adapt to a fading chain. Serious underinflation is how road tyres come apart at speed.
Overinflation is usually deliberate, built on the folklore that firmer is sportier. It crowns the tread, shrinks the contact patch and costs wet grip — the opposite of the intended result.
Your worn tyres are an audit of your pressure habits. Shoulders gone while the centre still has depth points at chronic underinflation or enthusiastic corner miles; a centre worn flat is either commuting mileage doing what it does or pressure run too high, and the replacement triggers tell you which. Read the old tyre before the new one goes on — it is the cheapest diagnosis you will ever get.
Load changes the numbers
The manual gives a second set of pressures for a passenger or full luggage, typically 0.2–0.3 bar (3–4 psi) more in the rear. Use them: extra load flexes the carcass exactly the way underinflation does. Setting pressures for the load is a standard line in any trip preparation, and it is worth doing for a weekend two-up as much as for a three-week tour.
Track-day pressures are a different discipline — lower targets measured hot, tyre warmers, adjustments between sessions. They rely on the circuit keeping the tyre at working temperature, which a road never does. Do not carry paddock numbers home: a road tyre at track pressure is simply an underinflated tyre.
Gauges, valves, and small habits
Cheap pencil gauges disagree with each other by 0.2 bar (3 psi) or more. A decent digital gauge costs $10–20 (€9–18); buy one and use the same gauge every time, because consistency matters more than absolute accuracy. A small hand or foot pump at home completes the kit — riding to a petrol station airline warms the tyres on the way, which defeats the point of the check. Fit valve caps that seal — they are the backup for the valve core — and glance at the stems for cracking whenever the tyres are changed.
The weekly check pays a second dividend: with your eyes at the sidewall you are also the first to spot damage, cracking and the date code. Pressure discipline is the biggest factor in tyre life that you control, but age ends a tyre even when the tread survives.
